This past weekend, for the second year in a row, I completed Tough Mudder.  A fear-provoking, adrenaline-pumping, 10+ mile obstacle course situated in majestic Beaver Creek, CO.

I tortured myself through endless steep inclines and 20 physically and mentally challenging obstacles.  Together with my teammates, or shall I say “fearless warriors”, we climbed over 12 foot walls, endured numerous electric shocks, swam under and through ice cold bodies of water, and crawled through endless mud pits.  It took me and my teammates strength, endurance, camaraderie, and determination to get through the course.

But I honestly have to say I greatly enjoyed competing in this “triathlon on steroids”.  The reason?  It truly tested my mental grit.  It challenged my mind, body, and soul!  When confronted with each obstacle, I had to push through my fear and self-doubt.  I faced my fear head-on and conquered it!  What a BEAUTIFUL and empowering feeling!

How often do you confront your fears?  I struggle with mine (and my negative “self-talk”) everyday.  Are we TOUGH enough to defeat them?  The BEAUTY lies not only in the acknowledgement of our greatest fears and “obstacles” but, more importantly, in the willingness to try to diminish them.  It’s not an easy task, but let’s try not to become paralyzed by our fears in life!
